NI Candle Supplies No Longer Stocks Augeo

Remember the buzz around the Augeo reed diffuser base last July? We've got some updates for you. After pulling Augeo from our shelves due to safety concerns, we eagerly awaited the results of retesting by EU REACH, which were released late in 2023. Turns out, Augeo is pretty much as safe as everyone thought, which is great news. 

But here's the catch: it's no longer meeting our cruelty-free standards. At NI Candle Supplies, making ethical choices is at the heart of what we do. So, we're choosing to part ways with Augeo and are excited to share with you what this means for our future and your fragrance experience.

A recap of the previous findings

Lastyear, we hit a bit of a bump with our beloved Augeo diffuser base. 

For those who love crafting reed diffusers, this was big news. Augeo got a new classification: "H361d - suspected of damaging fertility or the unborn child." This triggered a whole host of changes to the labelling and handling requirements for the base and it’s fair to say was a nightmare for all concerned! 

In response to this rather unexpected change, we made the decision to suspend sales of Augeo once our current stock was depleted and instead shifted our focus to finding a suitable alternative to a very big problem. 

The manufacturers of Augeo didn't just sit back either. They petitioned EU REACH––the governing body who had ordered the original testing that triggered the change in classification––to retest the product given no such adverse effects had been found previously.  They were as surprised as we were about this new classification, and while they erred on the side of caution by proactively adopting the new classification, they wanted to double-check everything for safety's sake. 

Through all this, our top priority was keeping you in the loop. We wanted to make sure you knew what was happening with Augeo, how it affected what you were making, and that we were doing everything by the book.

An update on the new findings

The recent re-evaluation of Augeo has brought some reassuring news. 

Upon further testing and analysis, it was found that Augeo is generally safe for use, aligning closely with the initial assessments of its safety profile. This is a significant update for those who have been following the journey of this product and its impact on home fragrance creations. 

However, it's important to note that while Augeo is largely safe, it's not entirely without risk. Specifically, there is a potential for the base to cause serious eye irritation if not used correctly. This has always been the case and is not a new risk associated with Augeo but it is important to be aware of the risk and ensure that your customers are also. 

The good news is that the restesting of Augeo and subsequent removal of the H316 classification means that the CLP labelling templates revert to their original format. We will begin uploading these to our website for each of our diffuser suitable fragrances as soon as possible to make labelling your diffuser products a breeze once more.

We realised that continuing with Augeo would mean compromising on these core principles that define us and our relationship with you, our customers.

Even though we won’t be restocking Augeo, don't worry, we're not leaving you hanging. We've been busy bees and have whipped up something special as a replacement.
